Transitions ...
Transitioning from Employee to Entrepreneur ... A journey with pitfalls
I have been writing on Medium for some time now. Since some editors and other like-minded writers were sending me posts and info from Substack, I started exploring what the heck was Substack.
A bit about me
JudysBusinessBlog came alive in 2008. I have an extensive background in technology, and I wanted a place to add tips and information for all the small businesswomen, who are transitioning from an employee mindset to an entrepreneur one.
Boomer women became my target audience. Mass layoffs, downsizing, and early retirements were the trend. These women already had a hobby. But now, they were thinking of turning that hobby into a business venture.
How I turned my hobby into a business venture
My cousin, in her 50s, went back to school and became an esthetician. She didn’t want to work for someone else; she wanted to have her business entity. Since my background was in technology, software, and creative marketing, she turned to me for help.
Researching different spa software and recommending internet connectivity venues was key. I created a WordPress website/blog and synced her social networks with her blog postings. Business cards, brochures, instructions, product advertising, and selling, we dove right in,
What work this all was. We flew to Las Vegas to attend a huge spa convention, with me taking classes to help solve some of her business issues. I created marketing pieces for her that helped promote her business.
She began referring other women boomers to me. These women had a great hobby and wanted to make it a business venture. I also enrolled in classes at our local SBA office to gain further information, resources, and referrals.
What changed? My bout with breast cancer. For 18 months, I endured chemotherapy treatments. I had referred my boomer clients to others who could help them during this time. But they refused to use my referrals. If they ran out of marketing materials, they just made copies and distributed them.
They waited for me. They explained to their clients that their marketing lady was beating cancer. Frankly, it blew me away.
This was my start to becoming an entrepreneur. Kind of weird, huh? I did not go into helping these fine women to create a business venture for myself. I simply had an area of expertise, and I wanted to share this with them.
My Community
I am looking to build a like-minded network of people who love to share information, promote others, and help me learn new techniques.
Sharing significant stories of small business entrepreneurs, men and women, who have beat the odds, made it through the tough patches to turn their hobby, passion & expertise into a successful business venture. I believe in promoting others and I also believe in sharing great information.
My passion is writing your story. I “Tell Your Story To The People Who Need To Hear It!” Yep, that is my elevator speech. Another little tidbit we all need to conquer.
I look forward to sharing my stories and adding new ones. Getting to know my new network is exciting for me.
I will be posting once a week to start. Sharing some of my work from Medium and my blog. My blog has a wealth of great stories ~ click right here to check out JudysBusinessBlog.
Sharing my posts (for free) and for my subscribers is key.
Subscribers, my live chats, and comments are there to delve into solutions for our many different issues, from accounting (yes, you have to keep track of your expenses) to social networks, finding our voice, creating your blip when people ask what you do.
I am excited to get to know you!

What an amazing journey!
We have both just started this month, have come from Medium, are solopreneurs and have been involved in the health and wellness industry.
Can’t wait to see where we both go with this. Let’s keep in touch 😊
Judy- Talking about trusting our struggles is a show of trust indeed. So important and needed to be said. Thanks for sharing.
